Crystal Deception Crystal Series Doug J Cooper Books

Crystal Deception by Doug J. Cooper is a must-read thriller for those who enjoy battles with aliens in outer space, sentient artificial intelligence (AI), intrigue, and romance. In most books I've read about AI, the sentient artificial intelligence's main goal is self-preservation. In this first book of this series, Mr. Cooper creates an AI (Criss) that is philosophical, questioning its very essence. Seemingly omnipotent, Criss must decide if it will be a team player or not. I really enjoyed this take on AI.

To prevent the Kardish (aliens) from capturing Criss, a team from the Union of Nations and Criss' inventor, Dr. Tallete, deceive the aliens by sending an inferior crystal intelligence into space. Angered by the deception, the Kardish fight the team, losing the battle.

Upon returning to earth, the politicians, perhaps guided by the aliens, want to recreate the AI. Can the team prevent this from happening and preserve humanity? To find out, you'll have to read the sequel.

I enjoyed the story with all its subplots. The characters, even Criss, seemed real. The action was well-paced—I couldn't put the book down. I particularly enjoyed how Jack and Sid resolve problems with what is at hand. Kudos for originality to Mr. Cooper!

Crystal Deception Crystal Series Doug J Cooper Books Reviews

Many authors think that all you need to do to make your novel into a science fiction story is to have the action take place in space or with aliens or perhaps robots. Doug is firmly in the space camp. The premise is sort of interesting. Alien space craft enters orbit not too far from now. Then does nothing. Or does it? It is not clear if everyone knows that crystal technology is supplied by the aliens or not. The author is not clear about it. Any ways, this technology which is really not explained, allows humans to produce an AI in a crystal. The crystal is 'restrained' by a mesh. But, it can hack into anything anyway and listen to all cell conversations and view any security cameras. I don't think the author really understands how hacking or the internet works. He is sure that his AI can do it in some unexplained way. Once that's established. It's off to SPACE! Once again the author neglects to mention how this is achieved, except that it's remarkably easy. The human ships zip around somehow and chase the naughty aliens. Who also zip around in a similarly mysterious way. Not to spoil the story too much, but once they sneak aboard the big ship it's ray guns and etc. etc. and in a massive under effort of writing the aliens are actually sort of people. This novel is rather silly and juvenile and feels like Hardy boys or Nancy Drew in SPACE!!!! It's not that interesting.
I love a good science fiction / space opera book that can absorb me into the storyline. Crystal Deception by Doug J. Cooper is not a good book but an EXCELLENT book full of fast paced action, adventure and intrigue.

I really like the way the author developed his story. He provides the necessary background info to make the story come alive and be believable. This is the kind of story that was easy for me to get into and become an invisible tag along. When I can become so involved in a story that I feel I am there then this is a great book.

The action was nonstop and the story was full of plot twist. Even with this, Doug J. Cooper's writing style made the story easy to follow and read. This is the style of book I hate see end and now I can't wait to read the next installment.

I found it very easy to identify with Doug J. Cooper's cast of characters in this story. They were very real and believable. The background info he used to develop them made them come alive.

I really liked Crystal Deception by Doug J. Cooper and I highly recommend this book to all readers.
Finished the edition of this book over the weekend. It's a very engaging story, and I didn't know or guess how it was going to turn out until the last page, which is an accomplishment in sci if writing today. I enjoyed the characterizations of all the major players, especially the AI crystal on which the book focuses. The science and technology are believable and well realized, and I found the last third of the book to really be a thrilling roller coaster where the outcomes weren't obvious. I'm looking forward to future titles in this series.
Sci-fi is a house of many mansions. Crystal Deception includes AI, alien invaders, advanced tech, advanced weaponry, politics and other elements. They all fit very nicely into a subgenre called Space Opera (no singing, tho.) The hallmarks, to me, of good space opera are inventiveness, hairpin plot turns, the ingenuity of the protagonist(s) at getting out of seemingly impossible jams, and a certain light-heartedness to go with the seriousness. I first encountered and loved these kinds of books as a teen. Since then, my horizons have widened considerably, so I almost forgot how much fun one of these adventure novels could be. Thankfully, Doug J. Cooper has reminded me big time! I ripped through this book on my kindle so fast the hinge on the cover started smoking! I look forward to the further adventures of the characters in the other two books (so far) in the series. Much of what goes on in this book has the gift of plausibility, especially as related to the motives of the various characters and factions depicted.
