A fantasy story with fairy tale elements, this is a sort-of-apocalypse tale: a sudden, unexpected event changes the way the magic of the world works, leaving a village isolated and vulnerable to a band of raiders. With all but one of the passages into their valley blocked by rockfalls and floods, tensions mount between factions (anti-magic people blaming magic people for the ill which has befallen them) as the villagers try to fend off raiders and cope with the new creatures suddenly popping up in their valley. Aren, who has been hiding her magic all of her life, suddenly finds her abilities strengthening...and a bit out of control. Aren may have a way to help the village but she will be the only one to pay the price.

I don't know if I can adequately explain my love for this book. Aren is possibly one of my most favourite characters in Patricia Briggs' books (closely followed by Mercy). The pace of the story, the changes Aren undergoes, the world, the Hob...all of these things just seem to flow together so well. And I've read this book several times (including multiple times in one year) since I first bought the paperback eight years ago. Now that I have a reliable mobile device, it was imperative to also get it as an ebook so that I always have access to it.
I know it won't work for everyone (no book ever does) but I hope you'll give it try if you're even remotely curious. I originally bought it because I liked the title and the cover art piqued my curiosity. I'm so happy I bought it and read it!

I have read this book some half dozen times. I love it just as much every time. It has a heroine who is not stunningly beautiful but who is honourable and brave. The world and secondary characters are given enough flesh to be fascinating. The two main characters are complex and their playful courtship is one of the best things in the book, without becoming the main focus. The main focus is a world rebuilding itself after a catastrophe, without ignoring how fear twists people. It is also simply good fantasy, with magic and magical beings, and a romping good yarn. Most people know Briggs from the Mercy books, but I can really recommend reading this book and her dragon and Sianim books. They prove that Briggs does traditional fantasy as well as she does urban fantasy.
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this book. I didn’t put it down until I was done. It’s nothing like Alpha and Omega or Mercy Thompson. This is a light, quick, clean, and read. It’s not what I’ve come to expect from Patricia Briggs but I was not disappointed. There’s a really sweet romance and a healthy dose of good against evil.

Aren has magical abilities, mainly she has the “sight”, which she hides to stay alive. Her brother was not so lucky. After a day of marriage she loses her husband and entire family to raiders (who play a major part in the story). Aren comes through to save her village by agreeing to the “bargain”. We are shown her strength throughout the book; she never hesitates to face her fears. Aren tries to hide her need for love and acceptance from everyone including herself. Who would have thought she’d have found her love, acceptance, and destiny in the Hob.

The Hob has missed many years, sleeping in the mountain until the magic was released. I really liked the Hob. At first he comes across as juvenile, but you soon learn that is not true. He is mischievous and loves having fun. The Hob goes along with bargain, reluctantly at first, following directions. He starts to enjoy Aren’s company and grows to appreciate and love her. I can’t say much more about him without giving too many spoilers ;)

This is a world that was well developed with details. The magic and all aspects of the “other” were developed with rules and intricacies were interesting and thought out. The secondary characters come alive with personalities and their own little quirks. I’d love to know what happens to the berserker. I hope someday to have more to Aren and the Hob’s story and more from this world.
