Sam and Dave Dig a Hole Irma S and James H Black Award for Excellence in Children Literature Awards Mac Barnett Jon Klassen 8601420442467 Books

Sam and Dave decide one Monday that they are going to dig a hole. These boys are on a mission and won't stop until they find something spectacular. Soon they have dug themselves in above their heads. Dave refuses to stop until they find something. After eating their cookies and drinking their milk, they ultimately fall asleep from exhaustion. The boys wind up falling and falling, yet they fail to see the treasure that eludes them.

The book has lots of humor and a surprise ending. Seems like the family dog knows where the treasure is all the time. Proves the point that spectacular means different things to different people. Generally I do not enjoy books with so much white space and sparse, stylized illustration, but this in this case using the earth tone colors and simple conversation, it fits the bill. Targeted for preschoolers and early elementary age children, but some aspects of the story are subtle which may lead some children to ask for explanation.

Sam and Dave Dig a Hole Irma S and James H Black Award for Excellence in Children Literature Awards Mac Barnett Jon Klassen 8601420442467 Books Reviews

I bought this book to read in my daughter's kindergarten class. All the kids loved it and laughed out loud. A really great fun book with a good life lesson too.
I teach. I collect and review children's books as a hobby. Needless to say, I have literally read thousands of children's books. This one is hands down my favourite. It is so clever and funny. I am yet to find someone who is not enthralled and eager to discuss after reading.
Good book. Was VERY SHORT. I didn't expect it to be so short.

Great illustration and cute story.. Easy read for my 5 and 7 year olds.
Such a cute book! I love Jon Klassen's illustrations and this is another winner. My daugther loved it so much when we got it from the library that I bought it here. Check it out!
Sam and Dave really do dig a hole in this book. The language is simple enough for early learning of reading, but the deeper lessons of leadership, followership, teamwork, persistence, the value of work, and self-awareness are what make me love this book. Keep alert to the beautiful illustrations, and you can help your child explore how familiar things can change when you have had a transformative experience. This is my favorite book on my daughter's shelf, and the book I am giving to friends with young children 2-5.
I bought it as a gift for a 4 year old. His mother said he loved it. I read it before shipping, but couldn't figure out where they dug out from. Maybe China? Oh well, perhaps that is why the little ones like it......they don't ask a lot of questions. They just enjoy the idea of digging a hole.
I read this book to my grand daughter's kindergarten class as part of their reading program. It is a cute book and the children enjoyed the story and the pictures. They all could see what Sam and Dave missed.
I am a substitute teacher, and this book is in my arsenal of read-aloud books. Kids in pre-k through fifth grade find it fascinating. The students get very frustrated when the characters are so close to finding "something spectacular" only to dig the other way, and the ending leads them wondering exactly where Sam & Dave ended their journey. Usually only a handful of students notice the difference with, "Hey, that's a pear tree, where's the apple tree?", then other students catch on and we go back and find the differences from the beginning to the end off the story. It lead to all sorts of questions, "Are they in a parallel universe? Another dimension? A cave? The center of the Earth?" And they all love the dog. Great book for a substitute teacher, or read-aloud day. The text is also easy enough for kids in first grade to read with little help.
