I wanted to like these books, I really did! The future! Nuclear dystopia ! Technology vs magic! So slogged through the first book because a reviewer posted that the story picked up after the first book. It doesn't. 1/2 way through the second book I quit reading and switched to something else. The amount of detail that Tilley goes into about things that do nothing to advance the plot is beyond redundant. I can't even count how many ways he decided to describe how people refer to sex or refer to dying in battle. HARD PASS.

Good Storiy but part of the series
Hard to read on its own
not to be read without previuos knowlege
Great series! This is book 2 and can't wait to start # 3. Great writing style and character development, imaginative look 1000 years from now, post Armaggedon.
Great series of books, although it was hard to keep track of the geographical locations since the names were all changed. ( That kind of made it difficult to keep track of where people were traveling to, which was a major part of the story.
I have previously read the whole series and now have copies on my to re read.
I can only say the whole six books were very exciting and maybe prophetic.
Very hard to put down. A excellent series
After the first two books in the series, I was expecting something different but overall, this book fits neatly into the ongoing saga. If nothing else, the author's attention to detail is commendable. I'm glad to be moving on from the ironmasters.
I like how various groups of people and places are variations of names today e.g. one group is named the Toh-toya and a place is Bu-furo. I would recommend this to anyone as it is not technical as a lot of science fiction books can be.
The author skillfully dovetails this volume into Part 1. Although futuristic science fiction, the author has been able to weave human emotions, values and reactions into a plausible tale. The technology employed into making the story flow seems 21st Century plausible. There is one drawback to this series, however. The sellers, true, to form, have packaged the story into relative short truncated volumes, while pricing the subsequent volumes at a sum equal or more than the first volume!
