It was a good story. It wasn't exactly what I was expecting, it is heavily laced with religious references. I found myself sometimes quite irritated with the heroine. She spent most of the book being in love with another man, which I was not a big fan of. She also constantly lied to the hero of the story, and didn't come out with the truth until about 85%.

The Unexpected Bride The Brides Volume 1 Lena Goldfinch 9780692264959 Books Reviews

A Lovely story. Love can be sometimes so confusing but also it can be simple and easy and the characters in this book have a healthy dose of both. A lovely old-time romance with good writing
Very sweet read. I guess sometimes we all want to be something were not. Sometimes we want to loved for who we are. As we all know God loves us in our sinful nature but once he comes into our lives we change, it really a lot like this book. Becky was a very strong young lady, wanting someone to truly love her the way she was , thinking she was hoyden and her Daddy & Jack didn't really understand her or love her for herself. As she became a mail order bride and meet Isaac they had issues. Becky thinking he wanted a lady not a hoyden, Isaac thinking Becky still loved her Jack, and could never love him. We are all so guilty at one time or another of not letting people know the real us. The book was a very good book but I such a sucker for a good love story and I always want them together into the second chapter but what fun would that be...lol
Tried this author and liked the story a lot. The characters were interesting and believable. Nice to read a book with a clean romance that keeps your interest. Have bought the next two books in this series. I recommend it for a pleasant read any time.
Rebecca Sullivan’s father thought she was a hoyden and was forever chastising her to be “a proper lady”. Becky liked to ride bareback; she was a crack shot and did things no respectful lady would do. When her love Jack returned from the war, married to a proper southern lady, Becky decided that she would be more attractive to men if she were a proper lady. She also decided that she could not stay in the same town with Jack and his new wife especially since she was expecting. When she found out something that her parents has hidden from her all her life she decided to answer an ad to be a mail-order bride. Trouble was, her intended groom didn’t know she was coming and wasn’t in the market. “The Unexpected Bride” by Lena Goldfinch is the name of this story. It is labeled as a “sweet historical romance” and that it is.

I enjoyed this book as a light read and would recommend it as a very relaxing book. You can find my review on my website at http//wp.me/p2pjIt-eH, on Goodreads.com at https//www.goodreads.com/review/show/1055270771.
Becky and Isaac are wonderful characters to read about. God's providence in their lives and the way that Goldfinch parallels the Biblical account of Isaac and Rebecca warmed my heart as I read. Anytime an author weaves romance and scripture into an engaging story, count me in.
Becky thinks that every man wants a true lady, which means no horseback riding astride, no hunting, and always wearing uncomfortable and impractical dresses. When the man she was in love with since she was a young girl, the same man who taught her to shoot and ride a horse, comes home with a very lady-like wife, her heart is broken. She still wants a family of her own, mainly children, and she can't bear being in the same town as the man she still loves, so she decides to become a mail-order bride. Isaac has no idea his father sent for a mail-order bride...for Isaac. He's not happy about it, especially when he finds out she's from back east. He's convinced a fancy girl from the east cannot possibly make it in the western mountains. However, when he goes to town to meet her with every intention to tell her she would have to find another man, he looks into her vulnerable eyes and cannot bear to turn her away. He's convinced she will leave eventually. After they are married, Isaac finds out Becky is actually in love with another man and he is greatly disappointed. He refuses to take second place in her heart, so it's easier to not allow himself to fall in love with her. Becky only longs for a place to finally belong, so she continues playing the part of the fancy lady so that Isaac will not send her away. Isaac wishes Becky knew how to shoot a gun and ride astride, but how can he expect a lady like Becky to do that. There are plenty of misunderstandings in this story. Through most of the story I kept thinking that if they would only communicate and not just rely on their own understanding, their problems would soon be solved. This made the story a bit frustrating, but some people are like that so it was not unrealistic. It's a good story.
I read this book a long time ago when my husband passed and I first came back to my home to care for my daughter who was very ill. It is ten years later and she has survived the cancer that was on her. I chose to read this story again and the hardships of Becky and Isaak really touched my heart. The strength and endurance that people must sometimes be called upon to embrace in their lives brings me to realize how important that having family is to me. Thanks for a really good story.
